Next Shift

Bridging the gap from Learn to Play to league play, and supporting women's player development every shift after.

Lucky Pucks Next Shift is a women’s hockey development initiative created to bridge the gap from Learn to Play to league play, while continuing to support beginner, novice, and lower-rec players as they grow. Practices focus on skill development, confidence, game readiness, and preparation for local league play and FWHL tournaments.

Why Next Shift: Women’s Learn to Play is producing a steady stream of new players, but there isn’t always a clear next step. Next Shift exists so those players don’t finish L2P and disappear.

Player Pathway:

Learn to Play → Next Shift Development → L2P/Novice Tournament Opportunities → Lucky Pucks Novice → Continued League/Tournament Play

Goals: Keep women in hockey, increase confidence, create more league-ready players, give newer players appropriate competition, create a stronger novice pipeline, and help players progress instead of getting stuck at the beginner level.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EVENTS YOU HOLD?

Half-Ice Practice

A smaller-group development session held on the studio rink at Rink on the Beach. The smaller ice surface creates lots of touches, repetitions, and opportunities to work on skills in a more condensed setting. Each session may look a little different depending on the coach and group, but the focus is always on helping beginner, novice, and lower-rec women continue developing their game.

Full Ice Practice

A full-rink Next Shift development session for beginner, novice, and lower-rec women looking for additional ice time and continued player development. Sessions may include a mix of skating, puck skills, passing, shooting, positioning, game concepts, and other activities depending on the coach and needs of the group. The goal is to build skills, confidence, and readiness for league and tournament play.

Drills + 3v3

An uncoached, structured ice session combining planned drills with 3v3 scrimmage time. Players will have time to work on skills and repetitions before using them in a fast-paced, small-area game setting. This is a more informal Next Shift session designed to provide extra touches, game experience, and ice time for beginner, novice, and lower-rec women.
